501(c)3 nonprofit organization
One of the most important credentials needed to provide credit counseling is being a nonprofit organization. DebtWave has been tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRS) Section 501(c)3 since 2001. We are a private non-operating foundation as defined under IRS 509(a). The fact that we are a nonprofit organization allows our clients to obtain benefits such as lower interest rates and lower payments from hundreds of creditors.

In addition to being a nonprofit, we are a proud member of the San Diego Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB continues to ensure DebtWave meets its accreditation standards, which includes a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. We currently have an A+ rating with many stellar reviews.
Certified Credit Counselors
Our credit counselors are certified through the Center for Financial Certification. To become certified, our credit counselors must pass the Certified Personal Finance Counselor exam with a minimum score of 70 percent. Additionally, our certified counselors are required to take a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education courses in order to renew their certification biennially, including two hours solely dedicated to ethics for financial counselors.
ISO Certified through BSI
DebtWave has maintained its ISO Certification since 2003. The British Standards Institution (BSI) conducts regular checks on our system to ensure consistency and standards are followed. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental, international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services, and systems.
State Licensing and Registration
DebtWave is currently licensed and/or registered to do business in 46 states including Washington D.C. Many states performing regular audits and/or examinations to verify we are meeting their standards.
Approved By the U.S Department of Justice
The United States Trustee has approved DebtWave to provide budget and credit counseling services for Pre Bankruptcy in California. The list of approved nonprofit budget and credit counseling agencies can be found on the United States Trustee Program's website.
