Healthcare, housing, and travel expenses are three big expenses Arizona residents say led to an increase in household credit card debt throughout the state.

The average household in Arizona owes around $7,100.

The total debt levels are higher in cities like Phoenix, where analysts attribute the increased spending as a sign consumers were feeling optimistic about the economy and were taking on additional debt without necessarily preparing for a financial emergency. Not to mention the increasingly expensive cost of living in Arizona, where the average single person needs to earn about $31,077 to live comfortably, with roughly $9,300 spent on housing and $3,800 spent on food annually, according to a 2021 report from CNBC.
