Set Yourself Up for Success with S.M.A.R.T. Goals

At the start of each New Year, we’re encouraged to set goals and resolutions for ourselves. The idea is that with the year ahead of us, we may be inspired to bring something new to our daily routine or break up with an old habit.

Typically the most popular goals are ones involving health, fitness, and money. And it makes sense! We’ve all just experienced the sugar-rush of the holiday season and some of us are sweating over just how much we accumulated, not just around our waistline, but on our credit cards.

Even if we managed to avoid incurring holiday credit card debt, we may have a money goal embedded in our goals such as:

  • Buying a Home
  • Paying Off Student Loans
  • Having a Baby
  • Remodeling the Kitchen
  • Traveling
  • Renting a Lake House
  • Buying a Boat
  • Splurging on a Designer Handbag
  • Getting a PS5

So what’s the best way to turn these resolutions into our reality? Enter S.M.A.R.T. goals or goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Sensitive.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

S.M.A.R.T. goals are goals that are:

  • Specific – What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
  • Measurable – How will you measure your success or know when you’ve met your goal?
  • Achievable – Is paying off $10k of credit card debt in one year something that the average person could do? Would a reasonable person find this goal achievable?
  • Realistic – Based on all of your other time commitments, payments, responsibilities, is this something that you can do? And do you want to do this?
  • Time Sensitive – When do you want to achieve this goal?

It’s when we turn our goals and resolutions into S.M.A.R.T. goals that we see the most success.

So how do we do that?

First, we need to figure out what exactly your goals in life include. So think about what you want to achieve in the next five to 10 years and write those goals down.

For example:

  • Pay off credit card debt
  • Buy a home
  • Establish and fully-fund a 12-month emergency savings fund
  • Travel to Bali for one-month

Now, based on the goals you have written down, we’ll turn these into S.M.A.R.T. goals.

Let’s say your goal is to pay off your credit card debt. You wouldn’t want to just leave that as your goal because it doesn’t give you any specifics with how much you’re paying off, nor does it include motivation, steps to take to move toward that goal nor a time frame.

So to turn this money goal into a S.M.A.R.T. money goal, you’d frame it to look something like this: Pay off $10k of credit card debt by the end of 2021. And then ask yourself is it S.M.A.R.T.?

  • Specific – Pay off $10k credit card debt by the end of 2021
  • Measurable – My goal is to pay off $10k by the end of the year, so I’ll know in Dec. 2021 if I was successful. But because I’m also dealing with a number, the debt amount I’m trying to pay off, I can measure my success throughout the year. So if it’s June and I still owe $9,000 in credit card debt, it’s a good indication that I am not moving closer to my goal and I may need to adjust.
  • Achievable – My goal of paying off $10k in one year may be tougher on some days than others, but I believe it can be accomplished.
  • Realistic – Based on income, other debt loads, expenses, time commitments, and other variables such as credit card APR, is this goal realistic? Answer honestly
  • Time Sensitive – I want to start 2022 debt-free!

The point is there are choices, it’s all personal and unique to you. And that’s part of the beauty of personal finance.
